Editorial and corrections policy
Someone deciding whether to take extra hours, move house or claim for a parent may rely on these numbers. So each one is traceable to the body that set it, and a wrong one is fixed in the open.
Who is responsible
Radif Partners, reachable at contact@benefitscalc.co.uk.
Sources we use
- DWP: the yearly table of benefit and pension rates, the Universal Credit Local Housing Allowance files and the GOV.UK benefit guides;
- HMRC: Child Benefit, Guardian’s Allowance, Tax-Free Childcare and the High Income Child Benefit Charge;
- legislation.gov.uk: the Universal Credit Regulations 2013, the PIP Regulations 2013, the State Pension Credit Act 2002 and their regulations;
- Social Security Scotland and the Scottish Government for Scottish payments, nidirect and the Department for Communities for Northern Ireland.
Sources we do not use
Newspaper explainers, claimant forums and other calculators may tell us what people are asking, never what a rate is. When two official pages disagree, the more recent and more specific one wins: the DWP rates table over an older example in a guide, as on GOV.UK’s DLA page, whose worked example still quotes an earlier highest care rate.
Testing
Every calculator is tested against the examples GOV.UK publishes and at the edges of each rule: £6,000 and £16,000 of savings, ages 25 and 35, the £204 carers’ limit, 8 and 12 PIP points, the State Pension age dates. A failing test stops the site from being built.
Review cycle
The full set of rates is checked every April, when the up-rating takes effect, and at least every 12 months; mid-year changes such as the Winter Fuel rules are added when announced. The date shown at the top of each page comes from the parameter file.
Corrections
- We check the report against the primary source.
- We correct the parameter or the code and add a test.
- The page shows the new date; a correction that changed an amount is mentioned on the page.
Independence
No lender, letting agent, debt company or political party pays for or reviews what we publish. A commercial relationship, if one ever existed, would be disclosed on the page concerned.
